The Work is a stress reduction method, based on mindfulness. It provides a clear, direct way to identify the root cause and to question anything that is stressful in your life, leading to an increase in well being. It is a series of questions designed to bring awareness to your thoughts and reactions, so that through your answers, you can find your own effective solutions. It does not require a background in meditation to do it, nor a special skill set, nor any specific belief system. If you currrently have a practice or tradition you follow, it can enhance it. In 1986 a woman named Byron Katie discovered that when she believed her thoughts it hurt, and that when she questioned them, it didn't. This realization was life changing for her, for Shawn, and for many others who have learned this method of self-inquiry. After seeing this simple truth, Katie, as she is affectionately called, went on to write the bestselling books Loving What Is, I Need Your Love- Is That True? and A Thousand Namesfor Joy. She continues to travel the world sharing her discovery that we can minimize our stress, and end our reactions to it, by questioning our thoughts.
The Work is simply 4 questions: 1. Is it true? 2. Can you absolutely know it's true? 3. What happens, how do you react when you believe that thought? 4. Who would you be without the thought? Then, you turn the thought around to it's opposites. ® It is a simple process, and within that very simplicity lies an ineffable depth.
The effects of a stressful childhood, and a marriage that wasn't working, led Shawn to a counselor's office in 2006 where she was first introduced to The Work. The peace and happiness she found as a direct result of this process inspired her to share it with others. Shawn has been a facilitator of the form of stress reduction called "The Work" since 2007. Her joy is in helping others find their way to happiness.
Shawn's passion for The Work was born out of a desire to understand and heal suffering and stress. She is comfortable facilitating any topic, and has extensive experience working on:
